Match 18:

Clontarf 17th September 2006

Full match and seasons report from Ronan to follow soon.

See Carlow news re function on our home page

Great win by the team against Clontarf in a 90 over 12:30  start time match played away. Clontarf won the toss and elected to bat. Ronan was delayed arriving to do his usual Captaincy, as he was collecting our star bowler Matthew Pitt from the airport. Added to this fact also was that Matt's flight was delayed as he was on trial with the Somerset  County Cricket Colts Team for the week as a strike bowler -  so we were indeed lucky to be able to get him back !!  - only kidding here as Matt was attending a friend's wedding in London  !

Robbie and Matt went on to dismiss a dogged opening partnership from Clontarf with many catching chances missed along the way . Ultimately Clontarf were dismissed for 187 after 42 overs, which proved crucial in terms of the extra available 3 overs accruing then to Halverstown.

Halverstown started their batting well  with Robbie and Geoff opening and getting to 75 for no loss after 18 overs. However the opening pair were both back in the change room with the score on  80, and Alan and Des took on the batting strain and became our stalwarts, after Lance and Shane had been lost cheaply.

Strong rear guard support action from Alan and  Darren (both with towering pulled 6's near the end when the run rate required was 6 to the over) and finally George with two beautifully timed cover drives, brought Halverstown victory with less than 10 balls to spare in the 47th over. "Batsman of Match" had to be Des for his tenacious stands with Alan and Darren, and even with a pulled hammy and runner Des was able to keep the scoreboard ticking over productively during a tough period of play when the opposition main strike bowlers returned - Des was finally run out avoiding a throw in - there was an interesting debate as to whether he was stumped or run  out - the runner crossed and the run out decision stood ?! Bowler of the day was Matt for his 4 wickets and the Catch of the Day was Robbie's deep mid-on catch with ball coming at speed high over his right shoulder.

Note : Pictures taken during the match and some post match team shots taken by Des to follow soon once negatives available for scanning soon!

Match 17:

Merrion 3rd September 2006

Good win against Merrion at Home. Merrion batted first and were all out for 56. David got five wickets for 16 runs. Halvertsown scored the required 57 in 12 overs with no loss - Robbie Devenish and Geoff Nurse opening. Des did a great keeping job, Shane took a real howler of a catch, with bruise to boot and Alan Ruddock captained the side ably.

Match 16:

V’s Old Belvedere 27th August 06

Playing for Halverstown were R. Devenish, H. Young, R Greene, S. Hogan, Des Gray, R. Pocock, D. Rayll, D. Browne, M. Pitt, D. Ruddock and R. Dunphy (Capt).

Halverstown won the toss and decided to bat. From the word go if was obvious that Old Belvedere were fielding a much stronger team than had travelled to Harristown estate earlier in the season. They were also lifted by their victory in the Intermediate Cup two weeks previously, D. Quinlan who scored a century in the cup final lined out against Halverstown. Opening the batting for Halverstown were H.Young and R.Devenish. Devenish played his usual brand of attacking cricked and was lucky to be dropped early on, he made the home side pay for this mistake and knocked up a quick 49 runs before being caught on the boundary. There were contributions from R. Greene 13, and H. Young 12. Top scorer on the day was S. Hogan, coming in at 4 with the team needing to continue its good start he held the latter part of the innings together with a creditable 52 Not Out. Halverstown made 167 for the loss of 6 wickets in 45 overs.

Matt Pitt opened the bowling with R. Devenish. Pitt took a wicket in his first over and put Old Belvedere under pressure. Both openers kept a tight line and were difficult to get away. As the game progressed Old Belvedere lost wickets at regular intervals and although the Halverstown target never seemed out of sight is was the constant wicket loss that eventually caught up with the batting side. D. Quinlan, coming in at 3, made 50 not out but in the end just ran out of partners. The pick of the bowling figure were R. Devinish 3 for 20, D. Brown 3 for 32 and R. Dunphy 2 for 18. Old Belvedere were all out for 139 and Halverstown maintained their position at the top of the Intermediate B League

Match 13: North Kildare

7th August 2006

Close win away to North Wicklow - venue between Maynooth and Kilcock.

Halverstown batted first and lost the on form Robbie early on to a real opening ripper from Afridi (surname only known with apologies). Halverstown recovered slowly with fighting partnerships between Dermott, Alan, Shane  and Geoff respectively. Halverstown reached 196 in their allotted 45 overs at a rate of 4.36. Geoff  top scored with 90.

North Kildare lost early wickets and were 90  for 7 wickets before a concerted tail wag occurred that proved difficult to break - even with the comeback 6 overs opening pace attack of Robbie and Matthew again. In the end Ronan and Danny did the necessary to bring the victory home by a narrow margin of around 30 runs!

Special mention of the day was the difficult boundary catch Darren took to dismiss one of  North Kildare's best batsman. Darren was so pleased he put both hands up in the air still with the ball in one hand in celebration, and the umpire thought he was signalling a six - Ronan quickly testified he was well within the boundary and the catch stood. Also the catches taken by Shane and Geoff were memorable.  Fantastic diving stops by Darren (rifle shot stop at deep mid on) and  Shane (great near catch at midwicket).

Special thanks to Matthew Pitts Dad David for most of the fine pictures taken

Match 12: YMCA

30th July 2006

Loss to YMCA.

Halverstown lost the toss and fielded first. A much depleted bowling attack with George and Greg on long leave and Matt unavailable, meant a large score to be faced by batsmen was on the cards. YMCA took full advantage in scoring a credible 218 in the allotted 45 overs, in overcast weather. Catches of the day were Dermott's high chest thumper - with a near collision with Andrew as well as Robbie' great caught and bowled. Quite a few catches were put down by Halverstown during the match, which are best forgotten -  but which cost dearly. Just before and during the lunch break  rain fell which made the pitch grass/texture  a lot more lively. Halverstown batted valiantly but fell far short of the YMCA target by more than 50 runs after a real thunderstorm and downpour, delayed the final outcome and drenched the field and pitch with 5 overs and 100 runs to still go. YMCA ran out as deserved winners in the end with some accurate and aggressive bowling with speedy over changing as well.

Match 11: Mullingar

22nd July 2006

Good win away from home

Note: Full match report to follow from Ronan. Halverstown fielded first and tight opening bowling from Greg (eventually 2 wickets and 3 really outstanding outfield catches) and Matt (eventually 3 wickets) kept Mullingar contained to 2 runs per over for first 15 overs - with both opposition openers dismissed in this spell. Second change bowlers Robbie and Ronan added to Mullingar woes with runs being contained. Fine third change rotation and containment  bowling from  Des, Darren and Henry helped limit the score until Greg and Matt came back for the final  spell - Mullingar were 128 for about 7 after 45 overs.

Halverstown opened with a batting stand of 80 for no loss before rain stopped play - after the resumption Geoff and Robbie were both out shortly, for 40 and 47 respectively. Richard and Henry saw the team safely to 129+ and Halverstown reached the target in 25 overs for the loss of three wickets.

PS A well earned enjoyable break from Irish Cricket is wished for George and Greg who are possibly away on holiday abroad for rest of season -we will miss both their talents-  regards also to Greg's Dad in Perth too from all of us here.

Match 8:  Wexford

2nd July 2006

Playing for Halverstown G. Nurse, I. Walker, Matul, G. Beaumount, D. Rayll, H. Young, I. Longstaff, G. Fletcher, Sunial, Des. Gray, R. Dunphy.

Halverstown won the toss and elected to field. The match was played in extreme heat with temperatures during the first innings particularly high. Wexford made slow progress at the start of the innings and lost early wickets thanks to excellent bowling from G. Fletcher and G. Beaumount who took 2 wickets each, conceding 9 and 29 runs respectively. Wexford’s run rate increased as the game went on with J. Redmond scoring 57. The tail was cleaned up by R. Dunphy, 3 for 31 and Marul,2 for 23. Wexford were all out for 140. After the interval Halverstown set about chasing down the total but were hampered by the loss of regular wickets. There were good batting performances from I. Walker 19, I. Longstaff 17, G. Fletcher 16 and an excellent knock from H.Young 67, which saw Halverstown home to a comfortable victory 141 for the loss of 6.

Match 7 ; Loss to Mullingar at  Home in a Cup Match : Halverstown won the toss and decided to bat. After a quick start by Robbie and Tim they quickly fell to a decent Mullingar bowling line up. With that went the Halverstown upper order. Wickets fell fast as Richard and Dermot, Shane and Darren disappeared back to the pavillion. George and Andrew then put a bit of respectability to the score with a fine partnership. George scoring 21 and Andrew scoring 23 not out. Lance was unluckily bowled by a fine ball and Richard Ryall was run out from a bad call from Andrew. Greg was caught at mid-wicket.
Halvertsown opening bowling was very good and Mullingar found it hard score runs off some very tight bowling. Excellent batting from the very resilient Sammy Murphy won it in the end for Mullingar. Best of luck in the next round to them.

Match 6:Great 7 wicket win against Leinster at Brannockstown - good overall performance by team in chasing down target 127 in under 30 overs.

Leinster won the toss and batted first and were all out in 40 overs - they were 8 down for around 95 at 30 overs .

Man of Match Robbie Devenish scored a magnificent unbeaten 64  and got two valuable early wickets in an 8 over spell  -  including Leinter's star batsman - sharply caught at first slip - millimetres from Alan Ruddock's  face - a really  fantastic reflex catch by Alan.

Bowling - Wickets: Danny Ruddock 3 - great effort, Richard Ryall 2, Darren Ryall 2, Robbie 2, George 1

Batting - Robbie 64, Tim Ronaldson got a handy 19 and Darren Ryall a tidy 15

Notable Catches - Andrew Greene catch of day - World Cup keeper penalty type diving catch low to his left at mid-on - just outranked Alan's great slip catch in terms of visual impact. Obviously following in Dad Richard's footsteps!

Notable Fielding - Lance Ayerst's sprinting on deep mid-on/off boundry and cutting off certain fours. Tim's 2nd slip diving stop. George's tricky slip catch off Ripper's bowling.

Great bowling by  Danny Ruddock who got a fifer and good batting by Richard Green 42,Alan Ruddock 24, Geoff Nurse 23. Darren Ryan bowled very accurately and was not out 10+.
